Trust Your Intuition

Do you ever doubt yourself?

Have you ever had to make a tough decision and wondered what to do?

If so, you’re not alone.

Decision making isn’t always black and white. A lot of factors influence our decision-making process. These factors include our deepest thoughts, fears, and desires, along with the opinions of others, whether we like to admit it or not.

Consider a time when you made a big decision. It could have been the college you selected, the special person you asked to marry, the job you decided to take, the house you purchased, the partner you established a business with, or the individual you agreed to hire. What led you to finally decide? Whenever I ask someone this question, the response I often receive is: “It just felt right.” That’s intuition or gut instinct. There’s something uniquely mysterious about it.

Sometimes we seek advice from others and everyone has a slightly different perspective. Other times we hesitate to make a decision even if everyone we know says it is the right one. The answers we seek may not be as clear as we might hope. However, they are there. Deep down inside, the right answer is waiting to be heard.

How do you hear the right answer?

Practice solitude. Turn off the TV, shut down email, and walk away from all the distractions that clutter your mind. Become attuned to silence. Silence is not the absence of sound. It is rather a quality of listening. As you settle into silence, you will become aware of sounds like birds singing, the barking of a dog, the banging of a door, or the annoying tick of a clock. Take time to become aware of these sounds and welcome them. Notice how they arise and fall away. Allow them to come and go. They do not take away from silence; they are a part of it.

When faced with making a tough decision, I turn inward and listen. As I quiet my mind, my thoughts slowly begin to crystallize. I can hear what I have been called into silence to hear. I can hear what I need to hear.

I encourage you to take the time to identify with your inner voice. It is the voice of your deepest self and it will speak to your hopes and dreams. Trust that you already know what is right and wrong, what is ethical or not, and what feels peaceful and what doesn’t.

Lean into silence and listen carefully–the answer you seek is waiting to be heard.

Learn to trust your intuition.
