Over Communicate

Most people don’t communicate enough.
95% of all problems stem from a breakdown in communication.
Effective communication is a key element of successful leadership. Amazingly, in today’s electronic world where smart phones, instant messaging, and video conferencing are all part of our daily routine, people still struggle to communicate effectively.
It’s easy to blame technology itself—that it’s making everyone less personal—but I tend to differ. The truth is many people are either too rushed or too lazy to take the extra step to ensure their message is clear and easy to understand. When they do communicate, it is usually in cryptic shorthand and others are reluctant to ask for clarification.
Self-doubt destroys employee productivity.
Most leaders make assumptions. They assume others know what to do or how something should be completed. These assumptions cause misunderstanding and conflict. Expectations need to be communicated clearly.
Effective leaders ask good questions.
Try this: Close your next meeting by asking two simple questions:
- What decisions did we make?
- What did we each agree to do, and by when?
I encourage you to evaluate your personal communication style. Do you find yourself frustrated with others when they don’t do what you think they should? If so, it is probably a sign that your own communication method may need to be enhanced and/or modified. Practice using the two questions above when you close out meetings. Invest the extra time to authentically clarify your intentions to ensure others understand your message and feel comfortable asking for clarification.
It’s not enough just to communicate—a leader has a responsibility to help others understand.
